Volume Landmarks

From Minimum Effective Volume to Maximum Recoverable Volume

Who it’s for

You want to understand how many sets you actually need instead of blindly copying someone else's template.

How it works

Start the cycle at the lower threshold of effective volume and add weekly sets based on recovery. The baseline for most muscle groups is 10 sets per week as a reliable floor, with 12–20 sets as the working target range. Beyond 20 sets, gains plateau: three separate studies found no benefit to higher volumes, and one even showed inferior strength gains.

How load increases

Evaluate recovery weekly using two metrics: muscle recovery and performance progress. Both good: +2–3 sets. One good: +1 set. Both bad: keep volume flat. Performance drops: deload. RIR target across the cycle: 4 → 3 → 2 → 1.

Deload

Week 5: volume drops to the baseline floor, loads are cut in half relative to Week 1.
