Barbell Z-Press
Shoulders, Triceps, CoreBarbell
The Barbell Z Press is a seated overhead press performed on the floor with legs extended straight out. It demands shoulder mobility, hamstring flexibility, and heavy engagement from your delts, triceps, and deep core.
How to do it
1Sit on the floor with your legs fully extended in front of you and hold the bar on your chest with a slightly wide grip.
2Tall spine, brace your core hard, and keep your torso completely upright.
3Exhale and press the bar straight up overhead under full control.
4Lock out your arms at the top and push your head slightly forward for proper joint alignment.
5Inhale and slowly lower the bar back to your upper chest.
Common mistakes
Leaning back during the press, which arches your lower back and shifts work from your delts to your upper chest.
Bending your knees or rounding your pelvis, signaling poor flexibility and breaking your base.
Pressing the bar forward instead of straight up, placing dangerous leverage on your shoulders.
Relaxing your core, causing loss of balance and increasing spinal injury risk.
Breathing
Inhale and brace your core before pressing, exhale through the sticking point, and inhale as you lower the bar.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, use an empty technique bar or sit on a small riser block.
To make it harder, add a pause at the bottom position without resting the bar on your chest.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
