Z Press

Z Press

Shoulders, triceps, coreBarbell, Dumbbells, Kettlebell

A seated floor press performed with straight legs that demands high mobility and total core control. Eliminates leg drive, forcing strict shoulder and triceps recruitment.

How to do it

1Sit flat on the floor with your legs straight out and hold the weight at shoulder level.
2Sit tall, brace your core, and pull your shoulder blades down and back.
3Exhale and press the weight straight up until your arms are fully extended overhead.
4Lock out overhead without leaning back or arching your spine.
5Inhale as you lower the weight under control back to your chest, maintaining an upright torso.

Common mistakes

Rounding your back or leaning backward, placing dangerous stress on your lower back.
Bending your knees or lifting your hips, which steals work from the core and upper body.
Pressing the weight forward away from the body line, straining your shoulders.

Breathing

Inhale before the press, exhale as you drive the weight overhead, and inhale on the way down.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, sit on a small weight plate or yoga block to relieve hamstring tightness.
To scale up, press a single kettlebell to force anti-rotational core stability.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
