Overhead Dumbbell Walking Lunge

Overhead Dumbbell Walking Lunge

Quads, Glutes, Shoulders, AbsDumbbell

A dynamic compound exercise pairing walking lunges with a single-arm overhead hold. It places high axial load on the core, hits the legs and shoulders, and demands solid balance. Keep your posture tight and locked in throughout.

How to do it

1Stand tall and press a dumbbell overhead with one arm, fully locking out your elbow.
2Step forward with one leg and lower your hips until both knees bend to 90 degrees.
3Keep your torso upright—do not lean forward or let the dumbbell drift off-axis.
4Drive through your front heel, step through with your back leg, and stand up tall.
5Continue walking forward, then switch the dumbbell to your other hand for the next set.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back or leaning sideways, putting dangerous stress on your spine.academic
Bending your working elbow and losing control of the overhead weight.
Stepping on a tightrope with a stance that is too narrow, causing loss of balance.
Letting your front heel lift off the floor as you sink into the lunge.

Breathing

Inhale as you step out and lower down; exhale as you drive up and step through.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, perform stationary lunges or hold the dumbbell at shoulder level. To make it harder, slow down the lowering phase or use a heavier dumbbell.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
