Typewriter Push-Up
Chest, Front Delts, TricepsBodyweight
This advanced push-up variation shifts your body weight from side to side at the bottom of the movement. It builds chest and tricep strength while training shoulder stability through multiple planes.
How to do it
1Get into a plank position with your hands placed significantly wider than a standard push-up.
2Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to form a straight line from head to heels.
3Lower your body by bending your elbows, keeping your torso parallel to the floor.
4At the bottom, smoothly shift your weight to the left arm while fully extending your right arm.
5Slide back to the center and shift your weight to the right arm, fully extending your left arm.
6Return to the center and press yourself back up to the starting position.
Common mistakes
Sagging your lower back, which strains your spine due to a loose core.
Rotating your hips during the slide, which reduces the load on your chest and twists your spine.
Shifting side-to-side too quickly, losing control and risking shoulder injury.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower down, breathe steadily during the slide, and exhale as you press back up.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down, perform the exercise from your knees.
To scale up, hold the side position for two seconds before sliding back.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
