Thruster

Thruster

Quads, glutes, shoulders, tricepsBarbell, Dumbbells, or Med Ball

Thrusters merge a front squat and an overhead press into one continuous movement. This compound exercise builds cardiovascular capacity, leg power, and upper-body stamina.

How to do it

1Rack the weight at your collarbones with elbows forward and feet shoulder-width apart.
2Squat deep while keeping an upright torso and heels flat on the floor.
3Drive up hard through your legs, transferring momentum directly into your upper body.
4Use leg drive to press the weight overhead to full arm lockout.
5Lower the weight back to your chest as you smoothly absorb into the next squat repetition.

Common mistakes

Pressing with your arms before hips and legs fully extend, losing leg momentum and gassing your shoulders.
Allowing knees to collapse inward when pushing out of the squat hole.
Arching your lower back aggressively during the overhead press, overextending your spine.

Breathing

Inhale as you lower into the front squat, then exhale forcefully as you drive up and press the weight overhead.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, use light dumbbells or hold a single medicine ball.
To scale up, increase the working weight on the barbell.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
