Supported Standing Dumbbell Overhead Press

Supported Standing Dumbbell Overhead Press

Front Delts, Side Delts, TricepsDumbbells, Wall or Chair

Supported standing dumbbell overhead press builds deltoids and triceps. Using support helps maintain balance and posture, while moderate axial loading requires core control.

How to do it

1Stand tall, holding a wall or sturdy chair with one hand for balance.
2Hold a dumbbell in your other hand at shoulder height, palm facing forward.
3Exhale and press the dumbbell overhead, stopping just short of locking out your elbow.
4Lock in your position over your shoulder joint without leaning back.
5Inhale and slowly lower the dumbbell back to shoulder height.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back excessively as you press, stressing the spine.
Using leg momentum to push the weight, turning an isolation press into a push press.
Pressing the dumbbell too far back behind your head, risking shoulder injury.

Breathing

Inhale at the bottom at shoulder height. Exhale as you press the dumbbell overhead.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a lighter weight. To make it harder, pause for two seconds at the top position.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
