Supported Standing Calf Raise

Supported Standing Calf Raise

CalvesWall or Chair Support

Standing calf raises with wall or chair support strengthen the calves and ankle joints. The support aids balance, keeping spinal load minimal for all fitness levels.

How to do it

1Stand upright facing a wall or chair and lightly place your hands on it for balance.
2Set your feet hip-width apart, parallel to each other, and distribute your weight evenly.
3Exhale and rise up onto your toes as high as possible, contracting your calves.
4Hold at the top for a second while maintaining stability.
5Inhale and slowly lower your heels back to the floor under control.

Common mistakes

Bouncing quickly, which reduces muscle work and strains the Achilles tendon.
Rolling your feet inward or outward, increasing the risk of ankle rolls.
Bending your knees during the press, shifting work from calves to thighs.

Breathing

Exhale as you rise up onto your toes. Inhale as you lower back down under control.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, lean more on your support or reduce your height. To make it harder, perform calf raises one leg at a time.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
