Straight-Arm Pike Press to Handstand

Straight-Arm Pike Press to Handstand

Shoulders, Core, TricepsBodyweight

The straight-arm pike press to handstand is a gymnastics balance element that builds shoulders, triceps, and core strength while demanding strong flexibility.

How to do it

1Bend forward, place your hands shoulder-width apart on the floor, and walk your feet close to your hands.
2Shift your body weight forward over your hands, locking your elbows completely and engaging your shoulders.
3Brace your core and slowly raise your hips up, lifting your feet off the floor.
4Drive your straight legs up through a pike into a full vertical handstand.
5Hold the handstand briefly, then lower back down smoothly under control.

Common mistakes

Bending your arms during the press, changing the movement mechanics.
Failing to shift enough weight forward over your hands, preventing your feet from lifting.
Kicking up with momentum instead of pressing smoothly using shoulder and core strength.

Breathing

Take a deep inhale before starting, and exhale smoothly as you press up into the handstand.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, perform the press with bent legs or elevate your feet on a block.
To make it harder, press up from a seated position on the floor.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
