Step-Up
GlutesPlyo Box
Step-ups are an effective unilateral exercise for building glute and leg strength, balance, and real-world functional power.
How to do it
1Stand tall facing a sturdy box or bench, one step away, with shoulders back and eyes forward.
2Place your lead foot fully on the box so your knee is directly over your ankle and your whole foot is planted.
3Drive down firmly through your lead heel to step up, fully extending your working leg at the top.
4Lower back down slowly under control using your working leg to cushion the descent rather than dropping fast.
5Complete all reps on one side before switching legs, or alternate legs as planned.
Common mistakes
Pushing off the floor with your trailing leg instead of letting the lead leg do the work.
Leaning forward or rounding your back as you step up, putting stress on your lower back.
Letting your working knee cave inward or collapse over your toes during the step.
Dropping quickly on the way down without controlling the negative phase.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower back to the floor; exhale forcefully as you drive up onto the box.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down: Use a lower step height or hold onto a wall for balance.
To scale up: Hold dumbbells in your hands or use a higher step box.
To maximize glute engagement: Focus on squeezing your glute hard at the top of every rep.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
