Standing Side-to-Side Leg Swings
GlutesWall or Chair Support
Dynamic leg swings warm up your gluteus medius and minimus while opening up hip mobility. Holding onto support lets you keep your balance steady so you can focus entirely on controlled movement. Excellent warm-up before heavy lifting or leg work.
How to do it
1Stand facing a wall or sturdy chair and place your hands lightly on it for balance.
2Shift your weight onto your standing leg, keeping that knee soft and slightly bent.
3Smoothly swing your working leg out to the side, then sweep it back across the front of your body.
4Keep your torso tall and upright—don't tilt your pelvis or lean away from the swing.
5Complete your reps, then switch sides.
Common mistakes
Leaning your torso sideways during the swing, taking work away from the target glute muscles.
Rotating your foot or hip inward or outward, throwing off the natural trajectory.
Swinging too aggressively, losing control over the motion and your balance.
Breathing
Maintain a steady breathing rhythm: exhale as you swing your leg out to the side, and inhale as it sweeps back across.
Make it harder or easier
To lighten the movement, reduce your swing height.
To add difficulty, pause for half a second at the top of the swing or use a light mini-band.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
