Standing Band Overhead Triceps Extension

Standing Band Overhead Triceps Extension

TricepsResistance Band

A standing resistance band isolation exercise for the back of your arms. Strengthens your triceps in an overhead position.

How to do it

1Stand tall, step firmly on one end of the band, and hold the top end overhead with both hands.
2Bend your elbows to lower your hands behind your head, keeping your elbows pointed forward and close to your head.
3Exhale and extend your arms straight up overhead against the resistance.
4Pause for a moment at peak extension to fully lock in your triceps.
5Inhale and slowly bend your elbows, lowering back behind your head under control.

Common mistakes

Flaring your elbows out to the sides, shifting tension off your triceps onto your shoulders.
Arching your lower back as you press, placing unwanted stress on your spine.
Using momentum or body swing instead of strict tricep extension.

Breathing

Exhale as you press upward, and inhale as you lower the band back down behind your head.

Make it harder or easier

To simplify, loosen band tension or choke higher up on the band.
To progress, use a heavier band or slow down the lowering phase.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
