Standing Banded Crunch

Standing Banded Crunch

Abs, ObliquesResistance Band

Standing banded crunches train the abs with minimal spinal loading. The exercise isolates the rectus abdominis and obliques, offering a safe way to strengthen the core without lying on the floor.

How to do it

1Anchor a band high up and stand facing toward or away from it, holding the ends near your head.
2Set your feet shoulder-width apart with a soft bend in your knees for stability.
3Crunch your upper torso forward by contracting your abs, softly rounding your upper back.
4Pause briefly at the bottom, squeezing your abs hard.
5Slowly return to the start position, controlling the band's tension.

Common mistakes

Pulling the band with your arms instead of flexing your spine — shifts load to shoulders and triceps.
Hinging at the hips instead of crunching — works the legs instead of the core.
Snapping back too fast — releases tension from the target muscles.

Breathing

Exhale as you crunch down and contract your abs, and inhale as you control the return back up.

Make it harder or easier

To regress, use a lighter band or step closer to the anchor; to progress, use a heavier band or add a 2-second hold at the bottom.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
