Snatch-Grip Deadlift

Snatch-Grip Deadlift

Erectors, traps, lats, glutes, hamstringsBarbell

The snatch-grip deadlift is a demanding compound lift that targets the entire posterior chain. The wide grip increases the range of motion, placing intense demand on your back and hamstrings. It requires solid mobility and strict technical control.

How to do it

1Step up to the bar and grip it with a very wide snatch-style grip.
2Drop your hips, flatten your back, and pull your shoulders back to load your hamstrings.
3Drive through your legs to push the floor away, keeping your torso angle constant as the bar rises.
4Once the bar clears your knees, drive your hips forward to stand up tall.
5Control the bar back down to the floor by hinging at your hips and bending your knees.

Common mistakes

Rounding your back under load—this puts dangerous stress on your spine.
Shooting your hips up too fast—this shifts the entire load onto your lower back.
Hyperextending or leaning back too far at the top—this pinches your lumbar discs.

Breathing

Inhale before you pull, hold your breath to brace your core, and exhale at the top.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, pull from blocks or a slight elevation. To make it harder, perform the lift standing on a deficit platform.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
