Smith Machine Squat

Smith Machine Squat

Quads, GlutesSmith Machine

The Smith machine squat isolates the quads and glutes along a fixed vertical track. The guided bar takes balance out of the equation, making it great for targeting muscle drive while maintaining spinal alignment.

How to do it

1Step under the bar, rest it across your upper traps, and grip it firmly with both hands.
2Set your feet shoulder-width apart, stepped slightly ahead of the bar, with toes angled slightly out.
3Rotate the bar to release the latches while maintaining a tall chest and a neutral spine.
4Inhale and lower down by bending your knees and driving your hips back until your thighs reach parallel.
5Exhale and drive through your heels to return to standing, keeping a slight bend in your knees at the top.

Common mistakes

Placing your feet directly underneath the bar, causing extreme knee shear and awkward mechanics.
Rounding your lower back as you reach the bottom of the rep.
Lifting your heels off the floor during the descent, shifting all the load onto your toes.

Breathing

Take a deep breath as you lower down. Exhale as you drive yourself up back to the start.

Make it harder or easier

To simplify, reduce the range of motion or use an unloaded bar. To intensify, slow down the lowering phase to three or four seconds.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
