Smith Machine Lunge
Quads, Glutes, HamstringsSmith Machine
A single-leg exercise on the Smith machine that targets the quads, glutes, and hamstrings. The fixed track allows you to focus purely on driving force through the lead leg without losing balance.
How to do it
1Position the bar across your upper traps, unhook it from the uprights, and stand tall.
2Take a step back onto the ball of your rear foot, keeping your lead foot planted firmly ahead.
3Lower your hips straight down until both knees reach roughly 90-degree angles.
4Drive up smoothly through the heel of your front foot to return to the starting position.
5Complete your reps on one leg before switching to the other side.
Common mistakes
Taking too short or too long a stride, jamming the knee joint or cutting range of motion.
Letting your front heel lift off the floor, transferring force off the glutes and onto the knee joint.
Leaning back and pushing off the rear leg instead of driving through the lead working leg.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower down into the lunge. Exhale as you drive up to standing.
Make it harder or easier
To simplify, decrease your lunge depth. To intensify, elevate your front foot on a small plate or platform to increase depth.
