Sledgehammer Lever

Sledgehammer Lever

ForearmsSledgehammer

An isolation exercise that uses leverage resistance to strengthen the forearms, build grip control, and develop wrist stability.

How to do it

1Stand tall and grip the sledgehammer handle near the end or middle with one hand.
2Keep your arm down at your side or bent at 90 degrees at the elbow.
3Moving strictly at the wrist, lever the heavy head of the hammer upward.
4Pause briefly at the top while maintaining full control and balance.
5Lower the sledgehammer smoothly back to the starting position.

Common mistakes

Gripping too close to the end without enough wrist strength, overloading your ligaments.
Swinging your body or using your elbow to momentum the weight up.
Moving too fast or jerking, causing you to lose control of the hammer.

Breathing

Exhale as you lever the hammer head up; inhale as you lower it back down.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, choke up on the handle closer to the head. To make it harder, move your grip closer to the bottom end of the handle.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
