Single-Leg Stand

Single-Leg Stand

Calves, Glutes, CoreBodyweight

A foundational single-leg balance drill that builds deep body stability. It strengthens the foot, ankle, glutes, and core to create a solid base for movement.

How to do it

1Stand tall with your feet hip-width apart and hands on your hips or at your sides.
2Shift your weight onto one leg, spreading your weight evenly across the entire foot.
3Lift your non-working leg smoothly, bending the knee to 90 degrees.
4Reach the crown of your head high, keep your hips level, and hold your balance.
5Hold for the target duration, then gently set your foot back down.

Common mistakes

Hiking or dropping your hip to one side, which unloads the glutes and strains your lower back.
Letting your standing knee collapse inward, compromising joint alignment.
Shrugging your shoulders and holding your breath, creating unnecessary neck tension.

Breathing

Breathe smoothly and calmly through your nose throughout the hold. Keep breathing to maintain core control.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, touch a wall lightly with your fingertips.
To make it harder, close your eyes or stand on an unstable surface.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
