Single-Leg Calf Raise

Single-Leg Calf Raise

CalvesBodyweight

An isolation exercise for strengthening the calves and soleus with minimal axial loading on the spine. Working on one leg challenges balance and strengthens ankle ligaments.

How to do it

1Stand on one leg, bend the other knee slightly, and lightly hold a wall or support for balance.
2Distribute your weight evenly across the standing foot with posture tall.
3Exhale and smoothly raise up onto your toes as high as possible.
4Pause at the top for a moment, squeezing your calf muscle.
5Inhale and lower your heel back down under control.

Common mistakes

Bouncing through reps without control, reducing muscle work and straining the tendon.
Rolling the foot inward or outward during the lift, stressing the ankle joint.
Bending the stance knee to bounce up instead of isolating the calf.

Breathing

Exhale as you drive up onto your toes; inhale as you slowly lower your heel down.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, hold a stable object with both hands for support.
To make it harder, stand on a step platform for extra range of motion, or perform it completely free-standing.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
