Supported Single-Leg Balance

Supported Single-Leg Balance

Calves, Core, GlutesWall or Chair Support

A simple exercise to build balance and strengthen your feet, calves, core, and glutes. Using a support allows you to safely master the single-leg stance, improving stability and body awareness.

How to do it

1Stand next to a wall or chair and lightly touch it with your fingertips.
2Shift your weight onto your standing leg, keeping the knee soft and slightly bent.
3Lift your other foot off the floor, bending it at the knee.
4Keep your hips level and your torso upright by gently engaging your core.
5Hold this position for the target time, then switch sides.

Common mistakes

Leaning heavily on the support, which takes the work away from your foot and ankle stabilizers.
Letting your hip drop or sag to the side, throwing off your alignment.
Locking out your standing knee, which shifts the load from your muscles to your joints.

Breathing

Breathe deeply and evenly. Do not hold your breath while balancing.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, rest your entire palm on the wall.
To make it harder, use only one finger for support, or try closing your eyes.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
