Single-Arm Dumbbell Overhead Press
Shoulders, Triceps, TrapsDumbbells
Builds shoulder strength, upper back stability, and core rigidity through unilateral pressing. Fixes left-to-right strength imbalances.
How to do it
1Stand feet shoulder-width apart, rack a dumbbell at shoulder height.
2Squeeze your glutes and brace your core to lock down your hips and spine.
3Press the dumbbell straight overhead until your arm is fully locked out, without leaning.
4Pause for a moment at the top with the weight stacked directly over your shoulder.
5Lower the dumbbell back to your shoulder under control along the same line.
Common mistakes
Leaning excessively to the side, putting bad torque on your lower back.
Using leg drive on a strict press.
Letting the dumbbell drift forward or outward away from your center of mass.
Breathing
Inhale before you start, then exhale forcefully as you press overhead.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down, perform the press seated on a bench with back support.
To make it harder, press from a half-kneeling position.
