Single-Arm Overhead Carry

Obliques, Abs, Shoulders, Traps, Rotator cuffDumbbell or Kettlebell

A dynamic stability exercise where you walk while holding a weight locked out overhead with one arm. It builds shoulder stability and anti-lateral flexion core strength.

How to do it

1Press a dumbbell or kettlebell overhead with one arm, fully locking out your elbow.
2Pull your shoulder blade down, brace your core, and keep your torso upright.
3Walk forward at a slow, controlled pace without leaning to either side.
4Keep your eyes looking forward and extend your free arm slightly for balance.
5Walk the set distance, lower the weight with control, and switch sides.

Common mistakes

Leaning your torso away from the weight, dumping load off your core stabilizers.
Bending the elbow of the working arm, putting dangerous stress on the shoulder joint.
Arching your lower back due to lack of core engagement.

Breathing

Breathe steadily and rhythmically throughout the walk while keeping your core braced.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a lighter weight; to make it harder, walk farther or take longer strides.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
