Single-Arm Incline Dumbbell Press

Single-Arm Incline Dumbbell Press

Upper Chest, Front Delts, Triceps, CoreDumbbell, Incline Bench

An incline single-arm dumbbell press focusing on the upper chest. Working one arm at a time recruits your core to stay balanced, helping fix side-to-side strength imbalances and building better motor control.

How to do it

1Set an incline bench to 30–45 degrees, grab a dumbbell in one hand, and sit down with your feet planted firmly.
2Lie back, extend the dumbbell over your upper chest, and brace your free hand on your hip or the bench.
3Brace your abs and smoothly lower the dumbbell toward your chest, keeping your elbow at a 45–60 degree angle.
4Pause for a second at the bottom, feeling a full stretch in your upper chest without shoulder discomfort.
5Exhale and press the dumbbell up along a smooth arc, keeping your glutes and shoulders flat on the bench.
6Finish your reps on one side, then repeat with the other arm.

Common mistakes

Rotating your body toward the weight — shifts load off the chest and creates dangerous twisting in your lower back.
Flaring your elbow out too wide — strains the shoulder joint.
Lifting your feet or hips off the pad — cuts off your base of support and ruins control.

Breathing

Inhale smoothly as you lower the weight. Exhale as you drive the dumbbell back up.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, go lighter or grip the bench with your free hand for extra stability.
To make it harder, narrow your foot stance or pause at the bottom of the movement.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
