Single-Arm Dumbbell Clean and Press
Quads, Glutes, Hamstrings, Shoulders, Triceps, TrapsDumbbell
A dynamic single-arm dumbbell movement combining a clean and an overhead press. Great for building power endurance in your legs, shoulders, and core.
How to do it
1Stand tall, holding a dumbbell in one hand hanging in front of you.
2Bend your knees slightly and drive through your legs and hips to clean the dumbbell to your shoulder.
3Catch and stabilize the dumbbell at shoulder height, standing fully upright.
4Press the dumbbell straight overhead until your arm is fully locked out.
5Lower the dumbbell under control back to your shoulder, then return to the starting position.
Common mistakes
Muscling the dumbbell up with your arm instead of driving with your legs and hips.
Arching your lower back excessively during the overhead press.
Rushing into the press without pausing to stabilize the weight at your shoulder first.
Breathing
Inhale before you clean the weight, and exhale forcefully as you press the dumbbell overhead.
Make it harder or easier
To scale down, use a lighter weight and add a slight leg drive to the press; to scale up, perform the clean and press in one fluid motion without pausing at the shoulder.
