Single-Arm Dumbbell Overhead Carry

Single-Arm Dumbbell Overhead Carry

Delts, traps, rotator cuff, coreDumbbell

A functional exercise that involves walking while holding a dumbbell overhead. Excellent for developing balance, shoulder stability, and core strength.

How to do it

1Press the dumbbell overhead with one arm until your elbow is fully extended.
2Lock your shoulder blade down and pull your ribs down to brace your core.
3Keep your shoulders and hips squared, avoiding any side tilt.
4Walk forward with calm, controlled steps, keeping the weight stacked directly over your shoulder.
5Stop at the end of the track, safely lower the dumbbell to your shoulder, bring it down, and switch sides.

Common mistakes

Leaning your torso to the side to compensate for the weight.
Letting your arm drift forward or flared out off the vertical axis.
Rushing your steps and losing core control.

Breathing

Maintain a steady, continuous breathing rhythm throughout the walk.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a lighter dumbbell and take shorter steps. To increase difficulty, go heavier or perform high-knee carries.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
