Shrug
TrapsDumbbells
Dumbbell shrugs directly target your upper traps. They build upper back strength, improve posture, and give your shoulders a thicker look.
How to do it
1Grab a dumbbell in each hand with palms facing your torso. Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart, shoulders relaxed down.
2Exhale and drive your shoulders straight up toward your ears without bending your elbows. Focus purely on contracting your traps.
3Hold the top position for a moment, squeezing your traps at peak contraction.
4Inhale as you lower your shoulders under control, letting the dumbbells stretch your traps at the bottom.
5Keep movement strictly vertical. Avoid swinging your body or using momentum.
Common mistakes
Loading too heavy, which ruins your form and cuts range of motion.
Rolling your shoulders in circles instead of moving straight up and down, putting unnecessary torque on shoulder joints.
Not lifting high enough or letting the weight drop too quickly.
Hunching forward or pushing your head out front, throwing off spine alignment.
Breathing
Exhale as you shrug up; inhale as you lower the weight back down. This keeps your core stable and motion controlled.
Make it harder or easier
To make it harder: pick heavier dumbbells or pause at the top squeeze for 2-3 seconds.
To make it easier: start light or execute the movement bodyweight to master trap activation.
Try single-arm shrugs to isolate each trap individually and fix side-to-side imbalances.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
