Overhead Press (dumbbells)

DeltsDumbbells

The seated overhead dumbbell press isolates and develops strong, rounded deltoids and upper-body overhead strength.

How to do it

1Sit on an upright bench with dumbbells held at shoulder level, palms facing forward.
2Press the dumbbells overhead smoothly on an upward path without clack-banging them together at the top.
3Keep a soft bend in your elbows at full extension to keep tension on your shoulders and avoid locking joints hard.
4Lower the dumbbells smoothly back to shoulder level under full control.
5Keep your torso braced and stable against the bench throughout the lift, avoiding swinging.

Common mistakes

Using too much weight, causing you to arch your lower back aggressively or swing the dumbbells.
Locking out elbows violently at the top, transferring load off muscles and onto joints.
Slouching or rounding your upper back, compromising shoulder joint position.
Dropping the weights down fast without controlling the lowering phase.

Breathing

Exhale as you press the dumbbells overhead, inhale as you lower them back to your shoulders.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down: Lighten the dumbbells and stick to seated position for maximum torso stability.
To level up: Perform standing overhead presses to force your core and lower body to stabilize.
Progress steadily by adding weight or reps once your elbow angles and path are consistent.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
