Mid-Shin Rack Pull

Mid-Shin Rack Pull

Traps, Lower Back, Glutes, HamstringsBarbell, Power Rack

The rack pull from mid-shin is a foundational compound lift built to strengthen your entire posterior chain. Starting at mid-shin lets you load heavier weights through a shorter range of motion than pulling off the floor. Because axial loading is high, keeping tight control over your posture is essential.

How to do it

1Set the safety pins in the power rack so the bar sits at mid-shin height.
2Step right up to the bar, place your feet hip-width apart, and grab the bar with an overhand grip.
3Hinge back at your hips while keeping a neutral spine and tension in your hamstrings.
4Drive through your hips to lift the bar, keeping it close along your legs.
5Stand up fully at the top and squeeze your shoulder blades without leaning back.
6Lower the bar under control back to the pins along the exact same path.

Common mistakes

Rounding your back during the pull puts dangerous pressure on your spinal discs.
Hyperextending your lower back at the top shifts work from your glutes to your lumbar spine. Brah
Letting the bar drift forward away from your shins ruins your leverage and core control.

Breathing

Take a deep breath in and brace your core hard before lifting. Exhale once you pass the sticking point or at the top.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, set the safety pins higher, closer to your knees.
To make it harder, drop the pins lower or progressively increase the load.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
