Push Jerk
Shoulders, Triceps, Quads, GlutesBarbell
The push jerk is an explosive standing barbell movement that drives force from the legs through the shoulders to lock weight overhead rapidly.
How to do it
1Rack the barbell across your collarbones with a grip slightly wider than shoulder-width, feet hip-width apart.
2Dip down into a shallow knee bend, keeping your torso completely upright.
3Drive aggressively up through your legs, transferring power from your lower body to send the bar upward.
4Quickly drop under the bar as it clears your head, snapping your arms out into a full lockout overhead.
5Stand up tall to complete the lift with the bar locked out directly overhead.
6Lower the barbell under control back down to your collarbones.
Common mistakes
Leaning your torso forward on the dip, breaking your vertical bar path and straining your lower back.
Pressing with your arms before leg drive finishes, turning the jerk into a press and losing power.
Soft elbows overhead at catch, risking balance loss and dropped weight.
Breathing
Take a breath before the dip, hold your breath through the drive and catch, and exhale once locked out overhead.
Make it harder or easier
To learn the movement, start with a technique bar or PVC pipe.
To progress, build working weight gradually while maintaining maximum speed and form.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
