Plyometric Step-Downs
Quads, Glutes, HamstringsStep Platform
Plyometric step-downs build lower-body deceleration strength while targeting the quads, glutes, and hamstrings. This unilateral exercise improves joint stability, balance, and control when landing or changing directions.
How to do it
1Stand tall on the edge of a box on one leg with good posture.
2Lower your free leg down under control by bending your working hip and knee.
3Lightly tap the floor with your heel or toe without shifting weight onto it.
4Explosively drive off your working leg to spring back up onto the box.
5Complete all reps on one leg before switching sides.
Common mistakes
Shifting full body weight onto the bottom leg, taking load off the working leg.
Letting your working knee cave inward during the descent or drive.
Dropping down rapidly without controlling the eccentric phase.
Breathing
Inhale as you lower your leg off the box. Exhale forcefully as you drive back up.
Make it harder or easier
To regress, use a lower box or lightly hold a support for balance. To progress, increase box height or speed up the rebound phase.
