Calf Press on Leg Press Machine

CalvesLeg Press Machine

Performed on a leg press machine, this isolates the calves with zero spine loading and offers a safe track for heavy calf training.

How to do it

1Settle into the leg press, pressing your lower back and shoulder blades flat against the seat back.
2Place the balls of your feet shoulder-width apart on the lower edge of the sled, release the safety catches, and straighten your legs with soft knees.
3Slowly let the platform push your feet back into deep flexion, stretching your calves.
4Press through the balls of your feet to push the platform away to peak calf contraction.
5Keep the safety catches engaged in a working position in case your feet slip off.

Common mistakes

Bending your knees excessively during the press, turning it into a leg press and unloading the calves.
Locking out the knee joints hard under heavy load, placing dangerous strain on joint ligaments.
Positioning toes too low on the edge, causing feet to slip off the footplate.

Breathing

Exhale as you press the platform away with your toes; inhale as you return to the stretched position.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
