Overhead Plate Carry

Overhead Plate Carry

Abs, Obliques, ShouldersWeight Plate

The overhead plate carry is a functional movement that builds core strength, shoulder stability, and overall body alignment under axial load. It trains upright posturing while walking.

How to do it

1Press a weight plate directly overhead with fully extended arms, gripping the edges with both hands.
2Pull your shoulder blades down, brace your core, and squeeze your glutes to lock in a neutral spine.
3Walk forward with short, steady steps, keeping the plate stacked directly over your center of gravity.
4Keep your ribs down and prevent your lower back from arching.
5Carefully lower the plate to your chest and then to the floor when you finish the distance.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back due to poor core bracing overloads the spine.
Bending your elbows fatigues your triceps and loses overhead stability.
Tilting your head back disrupts neutral neck alignment.

Breathing

Breathe rhythmically through your nose, keeping light, constant brace in your core.

Make it harder or easier

To regress, use a lighter plate or hold it at chest height. To progress, use a heavier weight or increase the carry distance.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
