Dumbbell Overhead Lunge

Dumbbell Overhead Lunge

Quads, Glutes, Hamstrings, Shoulders, CoreDumbbells

A full-body movement that pairs lunges with an overhead hold. Demands core stability, shoulder mobility, and leg drive.

How to do it

1Stand tall, press dumbbells overhead with arms locked out, and brace your core.
2Take a long step forward while keeping your torso upright and arms locked overhead.
3Lower your hips until your front thigh is parallel to the floor and your back knee almost touches.
4Keep your front knee tracking over your toes—don't let it cave inward.
5Drive through your front heel to step back to the starting stance while holding the weight overhead.

Common mistakes

Leaning forward as you step, throwing the weight off balance and straining your lower back.
Bending your elbows during the lunge, wasting shoulder stability.
Taking too short of a step, causing your front heel to lift and stressing the knee.

Breathing

Inhale as you step forward and drop down. Exhale as you push back up.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, hold a single dumbbell overhead with both hands.
To make it harder, perform walking overhead lunges.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
