Overhead Dumbbell Carry

Overhead Dumbbell Carry

Delts, traps, core, shoulder stabilizersDumbbells

A loaded walk holding dumbbells locked out overhead. It hits the delts, traps, core, and deep shoulder stabilizers, creating high axial loading while requiring solid shoulder mobility.

How to do it

1Press the dumbbells overhead with arms straight, without locking out your elbows rigidly.
2Brace your core and pull your ribs down to prevent excessive lower-back arching.
3Ensure the weights stay stacked directly over your shoulders and the mid-foot.
4Walk forward taking smooth, short steps while maintaining balance.
5Once finished, lower the dumbbells carefully to your shoulders, then down to your sides.

Common mistakes

Arching the lower back heavily due to poor shoulder mobility or weak core bracing.
Bending the elbows, which shifts load to the triceps and compromises stability.
Drifting the dumbbells forward or backward off the body's midline.

Breathing

Breathe deeply and rhythmically while maintaining core tension throughout the walk.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a single dumbbell or lighten the load.
To make it harder, slow down your pace or use heavier dumbbells.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
