Standing Single-Arm Dumbbell Press

Shoulders, Triceps, Obliques, CoreDumbbell

The standing single-arm dumbbell press builds shoulder and tricep strength while forcing your core to stabilize. This unilateral movement challenges your balance under a moderate axial load.

How to do it

1Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart, holding a dumbbell at shoulder height.
2Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to lock your torso in place.
3Exhale and press the dumbbell straight overhead without leaning to the side.
4Lock out the weight at the top, directly over your shoulder joint.
5Inhale as you slowly lower the dumbbell back to your shoulder.

Common mistakes

Leaning your torso to the opposite side, which reduces core engagement.
Using your legs to bounce and push the weight up, turning it into a push press.
Arching your lower back as you press, which strains your spine.

Breathing

Exhale as you press the dumbbell up. Inhale as you lower it back down.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, use a lighter dumbbell or perform the exercise seated.
To scale up, narrow your stance or use a heavier weight.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
