Leg Press Calf Raise

Leg Press Calf Raise

CalvesLeg Press Machine

An isolation movement on the leg press machine targeting the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Safely loads the calves heavily without placing axial compression on the spine.

How to do it

1Sit in the machine, press your lower back flat against the pad, and place the balls of your feet on the bottom edge with your heels hanging off.
2Extend your legs while keeping your knees soft, then disengage the safety catches.
3Exhale and drive through the balls of your feet to press the platform away, rising high onto your toes.
4Hold the top position for a second to get a full muscle contraction.
5Inhale and slowly lower the platform, letting your heels drop below the edge until you feel a deep stretch in your calves.

Common mistakes

Locking out your knees completely, which shifts load off the muscles and onto the joints and ligaments.
Bouncing fast at the bottom, which reduces muscular tension and increases Achilles tendon injury risk.
Placing too little of your foot on the platform edge, creating a risk of slipping off.

Breathing

Exhale as you rise onto your toes, and inhale as you slowly lower your heels.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, reduce the working weight or shorten the range of motion.
To make it harder, add a two-second hold at peak contraction or perform the movement single-legged.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
