Machine Hip Abduction
Glutes, AbductorsHip Abductor Machine
An isolation machine exercise targeting the gluteus medius and minimus. It improves pelvic stability and shapes the outer hips.
How to do it
1Sit in the machine with your back and lower back pressed firmly against the pad.
2Set the pads against the outside of your knees and place your feet on the footrests.
3Exhale and smoothly press your thighs outward by contracting your glutes.
4Pause briefly at peak extension.
5Inhale and control your thighs back to the start without letting the weight stack touch.
Common mistakes
Arching your lower back off the seat, losing core control.
Jerking the weight or using momentum, taking tension off the glutes.
Letting your knees snap back together fast, skipping tension on the eccentric phase.
Breathing
Exhale as you press your thighs outward. Inhale as you slowly bring your legs back together.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, drop the weight and lean slightly forward for better control.
To make it harder, hold the peak contraction at full width for two seconds.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
