Lat Pulldown
LatsCable Station
The lat pulldown is a classic move to build your lats, carve out a strong V-taper, and pack size onto your upper back.
How to do it
1Sit on the bench and lock your knees securely under the pads for stability.
2Grip the bar with a wide overhand grip, arms fully extended, feeling a light stretch in your lats.
3Pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving your elbows down and back, squeezing your shoulder blades together.
4Pause for a second at the bottom, contracting your lats as hard as you can.
5Slowly control the bar back up to the starting position, allowing your lats to fully stretch.
6Repeat for reps, maintaining strict control throughout.
Common mistakes
Going too heavy and jerking your torso to use momentum instead of your lats.
Pulling the bar to your stomach or knees instead of your upper chest, shifting tension off the lats.
Letting the weight snap back up instead of controlling the eccentric portion.
Leaning too far back, turning the pulldown into a seated row.
Breathing
Exhale sharply as you pull the bar down. Inhale slowly as you return to the top and stretch your back.
Make it harder or easier
If you struggle with bodyweight pull-ups, use lighter stack weight on the cable machine to perfect your form first.
To increase intensity, bump up the weight or use a slower tempo on the way up to maximize time under tension.
Switch up your grip width or attach different handles (like a close-grip V-bar) to hit your back from different angles.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
