Lateral Raise
Side DeltsDumbbells
Dumbbell lateral raises isolate the side deltoids to create broader shoulders and a stronger upper body frame.
How to do it
1Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart and knees soft, holding dumbbells by your sides with palms facing in.
2Exhale as you raise the dumbbells out to the sides until your arms reach shoulder height, leading with your elbows.
3Pause briefly at the top position to feel the peak contraction in your shoulders.
4Inhale as you lower the dumbbells back down slowly under complete control.
5Repeat for reps, keeping the work focused entirely on your side delts.
Common mistakes
Using too much weight: heavy weight causes body swinging and forces your traps to steal the work.
Raising higher than shoulder level: lifting past parallel puts unnecessary stress on your shoulder joints.
Locking elbows straight or bending too much: improper elbow angle changes the leverage and target area.
Rushing reps: moving fast without control cuts time under tension and reduces results.
Breathing
Exhale as you raise the dumbbells out to the sides. Inhale as you lower them back to your hips.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier: use lighter weights or practice the movement pattern with bodyweight.
To make it harder: pause for 1–2 seconds at the top of each rep before lowering slowly.
Focus on mind-muscle connection: prioritize strict form and side-delt contraction over heavy weight.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
