Kettlebell Overhead Hold

Kettlebell Overhead Hold

Delts, traps, rotator cuff, coreKettlebell

A static hold where you keep a kettlebell locked out overhead. It strengthens the shoulder joint, rotator cuff, and core stabilizers.

How to do it

1Stand tall with your feet shoulder-width apart, squeezing your glutes and bracing your core.
2Safely press or snatch the kettlebell overhead, locking out your elbow completely.
3Position your wrist so the bell of the kettlebell rests on the outside of your forearm.
4Pack your shoulder down away from your ear, keeping your shoulder blade stable.
5Hold this position for the prescribed time while maintaining a tall, upright posture.

Common mistakes

Arching your lower back, which happens when you lose tension in your abs.
Shrugging your shoulder up toward your ear, which overworks your upper traps.
Failing to lock out your elbow, turning a shoulder stability hold into an exhausting triceps workout.

Breathing

Breathe smoothly and deeply throughout the hold—do not hold your breath.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, use a lighter kettlebell or hold a single weight with both hands.
To scale up, increase the weight of the kettlebell or extend your hold time.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
