Jumping Lunge

Jumping Lunge

Quads, glutes, hamstringsBodyweight

The jump lunge is a dynamic plyometric exercise featuring alternating leg switches in mid-air. It builds unilateral leg power, strengthens glutes and quads, and tests single-leg balance.

How to do it

1Step into a lunge with your front knee at 90 degrees and your back heel lifted.
2Lower into a quick lunge dip and explode upward off both feet.
3Switch leg positions mid-air while keeping your torso upright.
4Land softly back into a lunge, bending both knees to absorb the force smoothly.
5Immediately launch into the next jump lunge without pausing.

Common mistakes

Landing heavy or jamming down onto your front heel, pounding your joints.
Letting your front knee shoot far past your toes, reducing stability and overloading knee tendons.
Slamming your back knee onto the floor on landing, risking kneecap impact injuries.

Breathing

Inhale as you drop into the lunge, then exhale sharply as you explode up to switch legs.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down, perform standard walking lunges without the jump.
To scale up, jump higher or add a momentary pause at the bottom of each lunge.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
