Incline Press

Upper ChestDumbbells

The incline dumbbell press targets your upper chest, front delts, and triceps to build upper body press strength.

How to do it

1Set an incline bench to 30–45 degrees, sit down, and rest a dumbbell on each thigh.
2Kick the dumbbells up to chest height as you lie back, holding elbows at a 45–60 degree angle relative to your torso.
3Exhale and press the dumbbells up over your upper chest, bringing them close together at the top without banging them or locking your elbows.
4Inhale and lower the weights back down under tight control, feeling a deep stretch across your upper chest.
5Repeat for the desired number of reps.

Common mistakes

Setting bench angle too high: Anything above 45 degrees shifts the load from your chest to your shoulders.
Locking out elbows at top: Keep a soft bend in your elbows to maintain constant muscular tension.
Dropping the weights down fast: Control the descent to maximize muscle tension and protect your shoulders.
Going too heavy: Overloading compromises form and recruits shoulders and lower back instead of upper chest.

Breathing

Inhale as you lower the dumbbells to your chest; exhale as you press them straight up.

Make it harder or easier

To scale down: Use lighter dumbbells or reduce the bench incline slightly.
To scale up: Increase weight, do more reps, or slow down the 3-second lowering phase.
Pause for 1 second in the stretched position at the bottom of each rep to build explosive starting power.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
