High Cable External Rotation

High Cable External Rotation

Rotator CuffCable Crossover

An isolation exercise targeting the rotator cuff using a high cable pulley. Done one arm at a time to build shoulder stability at and above shoulder height.

How to do it

1Set a single handle at shoulder height or slightly above, and stand side-on to the cable stack.
2Grab the handle with your far arm, bend your elbow to 90 degrees, and raise it to shoulder height.
3Exhale as you smoothly rotate your forearm back, keeping your elbow pinned in space.
4Hold the end position for a second, feeling the contraction in the back of your shoulder.
5Inhale as you slowly rotate your forearm back to the start, controlling the cable's resistance.

Common mistakes

Letting your elbow drop down during the rotation, shifting tension off the rotator cuff.
Using body momentum or twisting your torso, increasing the risk of shoulder injury.
Going too heavy, forcing larger muscle groups to take over from the rotator cuff.

Breathing

Exhale as you rotate your arm back and inhale as you control the return to the start.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
