Hang Power Snatch
Traps, Shoulders, Glutes, Quads, CoreBarbell
The hang power snatch is an explosive movement designed to lift the barbell from hip level directly overhead without dropping into a deep squat. It builds power, speed, and coordination while strengthening the entire posterior chain.
How to do it
1Grab the barbell with a wide grip, hinge at the hips, and lean your flat torso forward, lowering the bar to just above your knees.
2Initiate the movement with a powerful extension of your legs and hips, driving momentum up through your body.
3As your hips fully extend, aggressively shrug your shoulders and pull the bar close along your torso with elbows high.
4Drop under the bar into a shallow quarter-squat, catching it overhead on locked-out arms.
5Stand up fully to lock out the bar over your center of gravity, then lower it back down under control.
Common mistakes
Bending your elbows too early before full hip extension, losing leg power and overloading your biceps.
Swinging the bar out away from your body in an arc, shifting your center of gravity forward and making the catch unstable.
Rounding your lower back in the starting hang position, placing unsafe axial load on your spine.
Breathing
Inhale as you hinge down to the hang position and hold your breath during the explosive pull. Exhale once the bar is fully locked out overhead.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
