German Hang
Shoulders, Biceps, Lats, Rotator CuffPull-Up Bar
The German hang is a bodyweight stretch for the shoulders, chest, and biceps performed hanging from a bar. It requires precise control and joint mobility to build flexibility and strengthen the rotator cuff.
How to do it
1Grip the bar overhand and pull your knees up toward your chest.
2Pass your legs and hips between your arms, rotating your body backward through the skin-the-cat position.
3Slowly lower your feet toward the floor behind the bar into a full rear hang.
4Hold the position, feeling a gentle stretch through your shoulders and chest.
5To exit, tuck your knees back to your chest and reverse the movement under control.
Common mistakes
Dropping down suddenly without active muscle engagement, which can strain the shoulder joints.
Cranking your head backward, creating unwanted tension in your neck.
Jerking yourself out of the hold instead of pulling your knees back up smoothly.
Breathing
Breathe deeply and continuously throughout the hold to help your muscles relax into the stretch.
Make it harder or easier
To regress, practice on a low bar with your feet resting lightly on the ground.
To progress, gradually increase your hold time in the fully extended position.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
