Explosive Barbell Box Squat

Explosive Barbell Box Squat

Quads, Glutes, HamstringsBarbell, Box

Explosive barbell box squats develop power and speed in the quads and glutes. The box helps control depth and train explosive drive from the bottom position.

How to do it

1Position the barbell across your upper traps and stand in front of the box.
2Lower into a controlled squat until your glutes touch the box, keeping your core braced.
3Pause briefly on the box while maintaining a tight core and straight back.
4Drive explosively through your feet and fully extend your legs.
5Stand tall at the top without hyperextending your knees.

Common mistakes

Bouncing off the box to bounce up — significantly increases spinal injury risk.
Losing core tension during the pause — leads to lower back rounding.
Letting your knees collapse inward during the explosive drive.

Breathing

Inhale as you lower to the box and hold through the brief pause. Exhale forcefully as you drive up.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
