Dumbbell Sit-Up
Abs, ObliquesDumbbell
A classic sit-up loaded with a dumbbell to target your rectus abdominis and obliques. The extra weight builds core strength and muscle density.
How to do it
1Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat, holding a dumbbell tightly against your chest with both hands.
2Press your lower back into the floor and tuck your chin slightly.
3Exhale and curl your shoulder blades off the floor, flexing your upper torso forward.
4Sit up until you reach peak contraction in your abs.
5Inhale and lower back down under control, keeping constant tension in your core.
Common mistakes
Yanking your neck and head forward, straining your cervical spine.
Arching your lower back off the floor at the start using momentum.
Holding the dumbbell loose or far away from your chest.
Breathing
Exhale as you curl up and contract your abs. Inhale as you lower your back to the floor.
