Dumbbell Thruster
quads, glutes, shoulders, triceps, coreDumbbells
The dumbbell thruster combines a front squat and an overhead press into one fluid motion. It builds full-body conditioning and recruits almost every major muscle group.
How to do it
1Stand tall holding dumbbells at shoulder height, feet shoulder-width apart.
2Sit down into a deep squat while keeping your chest up and back flat.
3Drive aggressively through your heels to return to a standing position.
4Use the upward momentum from your legs to press the dumbbells directly overhead to lockout.
5Lower the dumbbells smoothly back to your shoulders and transition immediately into the next squat.
Common mistakes
Pressing with your arms before your legs fully extend, overstressing your shoulders.
Rounding your lower back at the bottom of the squat, loading your spine unsafely.
Letting your knees cave inward on the ascent, increasing joint risk.
Breathing
Inhale as you descend into the squat; exhale forcefully as you drive up and press the weights overhead.
Make it harder or easier
To make it easier, reduce your squat depth or use lighter dumbbells.
To make it harder, add a pause at the bottom of the squat.
This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
