Dumbbell Side Bend

Obliques, Lower backDumbbell

Dumbbell side bends target the obliques and lower back. Perform this movement strictly in the frontal plane using a controlled range of motion.

How to do it

1Stand tall holding a dumbbell in one hand, with your other hand on your hip or behind your head.
2Set your feet shoulder-width apart with a slight bend in your knees for stability.
3Slowly lean your torso to the side holding the weight, keeping your hips fixed.
4Contract the opposite side of your waist to pull your torso back upright.
5Complete all reps on one side, then switch hands.

Common mistakes

Holding dumbbells in both hands at once, which counterbalances the weight and reduces work.
Twisting your torso forward or leaning backward during the side bend.
Bending too far sideways, putting excessive strain on your spine.

Breathing

Inhale as you bend to the side and exhale as you return to the upright position.

Make it harder or easier

To make it easier, use a lighter dumbbell or just bodyweight.
To make it harder, add a one-second pause at the bottom of the bend.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
