Standing Dumbbell Shrug

Standing Dumbbell Shrug

Upper TrapsDumbbells

A classic isolation exercise to build upper trap strength with dumbbells. Improves shoulder girdle development and postural control under load.

How to do it

1Stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
2Keep your back flat, chest open, and knees softly unlocked for balance.
3Shrug your shoulders straight up as high as possible toward your ears.
4Hold the top contraction for a moment, feeling your traps squeeze hard.
5Smoothly lower your shoulders back down without dropping the weight.

Common mistakes

Rolling your shoulders in circles, which adds unnecessary strain on the shoulder joint.
Bending your elbows, taking work away from the traps and onto the arms.
Jabbing your head forward or tucking your chin, putting harsh stress on your neck.

Breathing

Exhale as you shrug your shoulders up. Inhale as you lower the weights smoothly down.

This is general guidance, not a medical opinion. Listen to your body: if it hurts, stop. If you have an injury or a chronic condition, talk to a doctor first.
